Hawks win title

BY BRIAN McCALLUM • FLORIDA TODAY • April 17, 2009

Christina Johnson has company at Viera. A standout during both of her varsity track seasons, she is no longer the only reason to watch the Hawks run.

"It gets me more excited that not only me but other people can make it to state," she said on Thursday. "This year, we actually know what we want. We're trying to win district today, both boys and girls, because it's never been done before."

Halfway there.

The Hawks won the boys competition -- scoring 147 points to Cocoa's 130 and Astronaut's 128 -- and just missed on the girls side on Thursday in the Class 2A, District 12 track and field championships at Melbourne Central Catholic.

Viera had been making a name for itself in team competitions this season and gave that cause an atomic boost. The Viera boys got wins from their 4x800 (8:31.45) and 4x400 (3:27.36) relay teams , 400-meter runner Kevin Coe (50.85) and Aaron Myler in the 800 (2:03.96).

Christina Johnson's 28 points for winning both hurdles events and taking second in the triple jump might have been the bulk of Viera's scoring in the past, but the Hawks girls also got wins from Amy Myler (2:23.15 in the 800) and the 4x800 relay squad (10:00.52).

The Viera girls lost by half a point when Lincoln Park overtook Astronaut in the 4x400 relay to win the event and the meet. Lincoln Park scored 145 to the Hawks' 144.5.

The host Holy Trinity boys and girls were second in the Class 1A, District 8 meet. First Academy had the girls champion, with 179 points to the Tigers' 129. The Pine Castle Christian boys scored 139 to Holy Trinity's 118.

Each of the top four finishers in each event advanced to next week's regional meets.

In two weeks, 1A and 2A teams will compete in state championships in Winter Park.

Johnson is building momentum as she works toward returning there. Last year, she was a three-event qualifier but excelled in the 100 hurdles, where she won her preliminary heat and was fourth in the final with a time of 15.54. On Thursday, shewon the 100 hurdles in 15.21 and the 300 hurdles in 46.40.

"I feel pretty confident, because last year I didn't understand the situation as well," Johnson said. "You have to focus on yourself and not get caught up in everything."
